My manual says that my 4100 with loader weighs 1500 lbs. Should I be concerned about driving it over my septic system?

For the occasional trip across the lawn, I really doubt it. While you shouldn't have regular heavy traffic across a leach field (danger of crushed pipes), 1500 lbs spread out over four wheels is really not a tremendous amount of pressure on the field. With turf tires, it's even less. I'd only be concerned if (a) I was making regular trips across the leach field and wearing a path; (b) the leach field was failing and/or unusually wet. A leach field is generally constructed of plastic pipes and gravel, which is pretty durable against light traffic. Also consider that a leach field has to take foot traffic (stand on one foot and you'll exert a weight of roughly 400 lbs per square foot!), and be mowed regularly. Treat it like the rest of your lawn: Don't park cars on it or let the 10-ton excavator travel over it, and you'll be fine. ....

In my area, a residential septic system is supposed to be built to withstand
7 PSI of ground pressure without damage. Dividing the weight of my JD855 w/belly mower by the contact area of my turf tires, it's right around 7 PSI. I'm comfortable driving over it as long as the ground is not real wet. ....

Good timing, just yesterday I called half a dozen septic system installers, designers and maintenance companies with the same question. The response I got from the folks who seemed most knowledgable was not to worry about it. I was asking about a 3000# tractor, they said as long as you're not digging ruts it would be fine. One said that they use large backhoes when the put them in, and that doesn't do any harm. This was interesting since I was expecting folks to come out with the easy answer which would be 'don't drive anything on it', and in fact a couple of them did say that, but they were the receptionists who didn't put me in contact with other folks in the office. Be sure to know where your tanks are though, I was cautioned about making sure not to drive on them. ....

Kevin, The 4100 actually weighs 1600# (according to the Deere specs) and the loader an extra 600#, so your unit actually weighs in at around 2200# (without filled tires, wheel weights, or an implement on the 3pt). ....
